A repair starts with finding the fault, and the fault is rarely where the damp shows. Water runs along a rafter and drops off at the first knot. So we get onto the roof and into the loft before quoting, then fix the cause rather than the symptom. Slipped slates, cracked tiles, split lead, a failed flashing at an abutment, guttering pulled away from the fascia. Bagshot gets its share of all of them, particularly after a westerly.

Pine litter, heathland wind and blocked valleys
The setting is what makes roofs here different. Heath and pine on three sides means a steady drop of needles and small debris all year, not only in autumn. It gathers in the valleys, packs into the gutter outlets and sits holding damp against the tiles.
A blocked valley is the one to take seriously. Once the channel fills, rainwater backs up sideways and runs under the tiles on either side, which puts it straight onto the felt and the timber below. Nothing shows for a while, then a ceiling goes. Clearing valleys and gutter runs once or twice a year is cheap. Replacing a rotted valley board is not.

Cedar shingle and other awkward coverings
Some of the newer builds around Bagshot went up with cedar shingle. It weathers to a silver grey that looks right among the trees, but it has to be kept clear of moss and needle litter to last. Chimney repairs on older Bagshot property
Period cottages through the village and the older brick houses around them mostly still have their original stacks. Lime mortar washes out of the joints over the years, the flaunching on top cracks, and the flashing where the stack meets the roof has often been patched with sealant by somebody in a hurry.
We repoint, renew the flaunching, and form flashings and soakers in lead the way they should be done. Where the brickwork above the roof line has gone too far, we rebuild the stack, reusing sound bricks and the original pots wherever we can so the house still looks like itself. Redundant stacks can come down and the roof be made good over them.

Clay tile on the older property, natural slate on some of it, concrete tile on the post-war and modern houses, and cedar shingle on a fair number of the newer builds. Finding a replacement for a period roof takes patience and sometimes a reclamation yard.
Ridge and hip tiles deserve a mention. On an exposed, windy roof they work loose long before the tiles around them do. Dry fixing with mechanical fixings holds far better than another bed of mortar, and it does not need doing again in ten years.

New roofs, from village cottages to the houses towards Windlesham
The larger detached houses on the wooded roads out towards Windlesham have complicated roofs. Several pitches, dormers, long valleys and a lot of lead. A re-roof there needs planning. Scaffold, staged stripping so nothing sits open, new membrane and battens, fresh lead where the old has cracked, and the courses set out so they land right at every hip.
Cottage roofs need a lighter touch and often more care, because the timber is older and rarely level. Whatever the size, the covering comes off, the structure gets checked and any soft timber is replaced while the roof is open. Every new project we carry out is backed by a full guarantee.

Fascias, soffits and guttering around GU19
Guttering has more to cope with here than in most places, so it is worth having it right. We replace tired timber fascias and soffits with uPVC, fit new guttering with proper falls and enough outlets, and add eaves trays where the roofing felt has sagged into the gutter and started dumping water behind it.
On the older village properties we can keep the painted timber look where that matters, and we will always tell you if a section can be repaired rather than replaced. Deep overhangs on the wooded roads make the ladder work slower, but the principle is the same.
Two jobs worth doing before autumn
Clear the valleys and the gutters before the pine drop gets going, and check the flashing round the chimney while the weather is still dry. Those two jobs head off most of the winter calls we get from GU19. Neither takes long, and both cost far less than the ceiling repair that follows a backed up valley.

Twice a year is sensible where there are pines or mature trees near the house, once after the spring drop and again in late autumn. Somewhere more open can usually manage with one clear a year. The test is simple. If water spills over the gutter edge in heavy rain, or a valley is holding a bed of needles, it needs clearing now rather than later.
Usually not. Most chimney leaks come from the flashing, the cement fillet or cracked flaunching at the top, and all three can be put right without touching the brickwork. A rebuild is only needed once the mortar joints have washed out far enough that bricks are loose, or the stack has started to lean. We will get up there and tell you which it is.
In most cases yes. Handmade clay and natural slate can often be matched from reclamation, and we will use salvaged material off your own roof on the visible slopes and put the new tiles where they show least. Exact colour matching on a weathered roof is never perfect on day one, but a good match settles in within a season or two.
Yes. Garages, extensions, dormers and porches are a regular part of the work here. We are a Restec trained and approved installer, so we fit Flexitec over existing surfaces and GRProof on a new deck, both glass reinforced fibreglass systems made in the UK. We also lay torch on felt, pour and roll and built up systems where those suit the building better.
